Additional functionalities can be achieved simply by swapping out these gas vesicles’ outer proteins like Lego pieces.

Scanning method captures ionic movement in electrochemical materials
With a method called scanning thermo-ionic microscopy (STIM), researchers can trace the movement of ions in a material.

Mesocrystal-embedded oxide systems offer future multifunctionalities
Mesocrystals exhibit new properties beyond those of their components, leading to enhanced performance of the materials in various applications.

Nano Focus: Nanoparticle library synthesis serves as a tool to discover new materials
The library contains 31 different nanoparticles, many of which have not been synthesized before.

OF INTEREST TO THE MATERIALS COMMUNITY

Engaging bright minds to create a bright future
In the majority of countries in sub-Saharan Africa, ∼25% of the population has access to electricity. In much of the developing world, the annual per capita use of electricity is less than 500 kWh. This is the equivalent of operating two 60-watt light bulbs for 12 h a day. Yet, access to electricity, particularly at these low consumption levels, is highly correlated with the quality of life.

Local materials and know-how key to sub-Saharan Africa’s energy shift
The energy landscape in sub-Saharan Africa is bleak. Half the energy supply comes from biomass, mostly wood and charcoal, burned in inefficient cook stoves. The resulting smoke and particulate matter pollution is linked to around 600,000 premature deaths. But the region is now poised for an energy revolution.

Takin’ it to the streets
It was March 2011, the Spring Meeting in San Francisco. What weighed most heavily on me at the time was that it had been only five months since my research advisor had passed away. Our project and my graduate career were just gaining momentum when everything got put on hold. This trip was my chance to carry on the legacy of my mentor’s work and share it with a broader audience. That’s exactly what happened, but not how I expected.
