Charles M. Lieber of Harvard University has received the Von Hippel Award for “pioneering contributions to nanoscience, defining the foundations of rational synthesis of nanoscale wires, characterization of their fundamental physical properties, and the development of applications of these materials in chemistry, biology and medicine.

James De Yoreo receives 2016 David Turnbull Lectureship
The Materials Research Society’s (MRS) David Turnbull Lectureship Award recognizes the career of a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to understanding materials phenomena and properties through research, writing, and lecturing, as exemplified by the late David Turnbull of Harvard University. James De Yoreo of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is honored “for discoveries that have shaped our understanding of crystallization science.

Robert J. Cava selected for the 2016 MRS Medal
Robert J. Cava of Princeton University has received the 2016 MRS Medal. He is cited for pioneering contributions in the discovery of new classes of 3D Topological Insulators.”

Gerbrand Ceder to receive 2016 Materials Theory Award
The Materials Research Society (MRS) has named Gerbrand Ceder of the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as the 2016 recipient of the Materials Theory Award for “seminal contributions to the emerging field of computationally guided materials exploiting high-throughput computation and promoting the development of open databases to enable widespread use. ”The Materials Theory Award is endowed by Toh-Ming Lu and Gwo Ching Wang.

Ellen D. Williams named to receive the 2016 Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Materials Science
Ellen D. Williams, Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) in the U.S. Department of Energy, will present her lecture in the Plenary session at the 2016 MRS Fall Meeting on Nov. 28.

Andrea Alù named to receive the 2016 Kavli Foundation Early Career Lectureship in Materials Science
Andrea Alù of The University of Texas at Austin will present his lecture at the 2016 MRS Fall Meeting on Dec. 1.

Catching the Wave

Technique: Reflected-light interference imaging.
Membranes of transparent liquid mixtures are visualized using interference of light from an extended white source. The heterogeneity of a mixture is revealed as color variations. Here the thickness of a membrane is of the order of hundreds of nanometers and the width of picture corresponds to about 1 mm.

Vertical Laminar Flow Workstations

Mystaire® recently announced the release of MY-ISO5 Vertical Laminar Flow Workstations.
