Scientists at the University of Alabama-Birmingham are developing nanoscale diamond coatings for hip implants to reduce potential joint pain to the patient. By decreasing wear in metal-to-metal joint interfaces, the technology could increase the lifetime of joint implants immensely while also reducing the number of foreign particles produced by wear that can lead to inflammation.
