Awards presented during the 2012 MRS Fall Meeting included the Materials Theory Award, Graduate Student Awards, David Turnbull Lectureship, the MRS Medal and the Von Hippel Award.

John P. Perdew, recipient of the 2012 MRS Materials Theory Award, presented "Climbing the Ladder of Density Functional Approximations." The Materials Theory Award recognizes exceptional advances made by materials theory to the fundamental understanding of the structure and behavior of materials. This award is intended to honor both those who have pioneered the development of a new theoretical approach and those who have used existing approaches to provide significant new insight into materials behavior.  An MRS OnDemand Event.

David Turnbull Lectureship Award »

The David Turnbull Lectureship Award recognizes the career of a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to understanding materials phenomena and properties through research, writing and lecturing, as exemplified by David Turnbull. This year's winner is Robert Sinclair, who presented a talk entitled "In Situ High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy of Material Reactions."  An MRS OnDemand Event.

The MRS Medal is awarded for a specific outstanding recent discovery or advancement that has a major impact on the progress of a materials-related field. Jennifer Lewis presented "Printing Functional Materials."  An MRS OnDemand Event.

Von Hippel Award »

The Materials Research Society’s highest honor, the Von Hippel Award is conferred annually to an individual in recognition of the recipient’s outstanding contribution to interdisciplinary research on materials. MRS 2012 Von Hippel Award recipient Stuart Parkin presented "The Spin on Electronics!"  Dr. Parkin's talk was preceded by the Awards Ceremony, where the Von Hippel, David Turnbull Lectureship, MRS Medal, Materials Theory and Graduate Student Awards were presented.  An MRS OnDemand Event.
