    MRS FELLOW PROSPECTUS

MRS seeks to recognize as MRS Fellow outstanding individuals who are notable for their sustained and distinguished contributions to the advancement of materials research. It is intended that, representing excellence in science and engineering, and dedication to the advancement of materials research, the MRS Fellows will collectively exemplify the highest ideals of accomplishment and service embodied in the MRS Mission.

    MRS Fellow Program

    • The number of new Fellows admitted each year will be capped at 0.2% of the current total MRS membership.
    • Fellowship will be considered an honor and the program will be administered by the MRS Awards Committee.
    • MRS Fellow is a lifetime appointment.  It is hoped that Fellows will choose to maintain their continuing membership in good standing.  In extraordinary circumstances, the title may, however, be withdrawn for cause.
    • Each MRS Fellow will be presented with a certificate of such recognition.
    • MRS Fellows may be invited to participate, from time to time, in special Fellows Receptions and in projects that call upon their advisory input on important issues of concern for the Society.
    • The names of MRS Fellows will be listed on the MRS web site. With the Fellow's permission, other information will also be included, such as photo, citation, brief biography, affiliation, and contact information.

Nomination for Appointment as MRS Fellow

    Eligibility for Nomination

    • Nomination is open to any MRS Member in good standing, whose membership has been continuous for at least 5 years preceding receipt of the nomination. In exceptional circumstances, this requirement may be waived.
    • Members of the Fellow Selection Subcommittee, the Chair of the Awards Committee, and the current MRS Officers and Board of Directors are NOT eligible for nomination.
    • Self-nomination is not permitted.
    • Each nomination submitted remains active for a period of 3 years without further action by the nominator.
However, nominators are invited to provide an update each year, and this is highly recommended.
Alternatively, a new nomination package may be submitted, which is intended to completely replace the old version.
Such a new submission will remain active for three years, as any other new submission would do.

NOTE:   The Nominator Guidelines for the 2008-9 Fellow competition have been substantially clarified, in order to more plainly describe the key elements of the nomination package, and more plainly articulate the selection criteria that the selection committee will use.   The Committee strongly urges each nominator for the 2007-8 competition to consider using these clearer guidelines to create a new submission for the current year.
    • The title of MRS Fellow will not be awarded posthumously.
