Metro Travel Tips

If you are traveling by Metro, you will need a SmarTrip card to enter and to exit the system. A SmarTrip card is a permanent, rechargeable fare card that is essential for moving efficiently around Washington by rail or bus. There are SmarTrip machines in every rail station which allow you to purchase an initial card and to add value to a card.  Some accept credit and debit cards, but all accept U.S. currency. The card costs $2, which will be deducted from your initial purchase.

Train fares depend on when you travel and how far you travel.  Rush hour fares are highest. System maps in each station show fares and travel times. Trains can be crowded during rush hours on work days.

To ride on Metro-Rail, choose a gate with a green light and touch your card to the reader. The machine will show your initial value and the entry gate will open. When you reach your exit station, again choose a gate with a green light and touch your card to the reader. The machine will show your final value and the exit gate will open.

Local maps in each station show the neighborhood surrounding the station.

If you are traveling with children, one or two children under 5 years old may travel for free with a paying customer.

SmarTrip cards also work for Metro-Buses and Circulator Buses, which can greatly broaden your options for local travel. The bus fare is fixed and bus transfers are free. Transfers to/from Metro-Rail are discounted. Just hold the SmarTrip card above the fare machine when entering a bus.
