about NanoDays
The
Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net) is a major National
Science Foundation (NSF) initiative to form a national infrastructure that
links science museums and other informal science education organizations with
nanoscale science and engineering research organizations to foster public
awareness, engagement, and understanding of nanoscale science, engineering, and
technology. We invite you to find out more about the NISE Network by visiting
the NISE Network website and joining the effort.
The
Network was originally launched in 2005 through a five-year, $20 million
cooperative agreement with the NSF with the intention to:
- Create a set of interactive media-based and
discourse-based educational
products that effectively communicate and
engage the public with nanoscale
science and engineering,
- Generate essential new knowledge about design for
learning for these
subject areas, and
- Produce a sustainable network of relationships,
alliances,
and professional development.

Originally
led by the Museum of Science, Boston, the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and
the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul, the Network is now led by 14 museums and universities across the nation and includes hundreds more museums,
universities, and informal science education organizations as partners. In
2010, the NISE Network was awarded a second five-year, $21 million grant to
continue its work of engaging public audiences in this cutting-edge science and
technology.
The
purpose of the NISE Net website
- To facilitate communication and collaboration among
informal
science educators and nano scientists
- To share educational resources and tools with
professional educators
- To provide the public with links to information and
activities about nano science, technology, and engineering through our
public page www.WhatisNano.org
MRS Role
The Materials
Research Society (MRS) plays a major role in NISE Network, linking scientists
interested in public outreach with informal science education projects, offering
authoritative scientific information, and providing meeting venues for NISE
Network activities
The NISE
Network is an excellent opportunity for MRS members to get involved in
high-impact outreach projects in their own communities. The NISE Network needs
your NSET expertise, involvement and input to help create some unique project
deliverables. Join the network at http://www.nisenet.org/user
