Warrendale, PA/June 9, 2010: The Materials Research Society (MRS) and Cambridge University Press announced today that they have formed an exciting new publishing partnership to produce MRS’s flagship publications—MRS Bulletin, Journal of Materials Research (JMR), MRS Online Proceedings Library (OPL) and Materials360®—and to develop new journals, books and online products encompassing the full range of materials science and engineering. MRS Bulletin, currently celebrating its 35th anniversary, is one of the most widely recognized and highly respected publications in advanced materials research, with an impact factor of 5.29 for 2008. It is published monthly and features technical theme topics that capture the interdisciplinary nature of materials science and innovation. These coordinated collections of articles, written by experts in the field, disseminate state-of-the-art materials research understandable to a broad scientific audience.

Journal of Materials Research, celebrating its 25th year, is a premier archival journal devoted to original research encompassing all aspects of materials science. Edited by renowned materials scientists from the world’s most respected research facilities, it contains archival papers, communications and reviews. The MRS Online Proceedings Library offers unlimited full-text availability to over 65,000 papers from the well-recognized MRS Symposium Proceedings Series—proceedings published from Volume 1 to the present, with more added daily. The collection also includes over 5000 proceedings papers that were never published in print format and are available only online.

Materials360®, now in its 10th year, is a semi-monthly electronic newsletter encapsulating current happenings in materials research and providing insight into the rapidly changing world of materials. It reaches over 85,000 readers worldwide with research alerts and news from the global materials enterprise.

Together, Cambridge and MRS will bring a comprehensive approach to developing the entire portfolio of MRS publications in terms of scope, reach and impact. The journals will be hosted on Cambridge’s cutting-edge electronic platform, Cambridge Journals Online (http://journals.cambridge.org), and will include increased usability, increased functionality and many new features to enhance and optimize article usage. MRS and Cambridge will also explore development of a wide range of new journals and books.

“This historic partnership marks a new era for MRS,” explains David Ginley, President of the Materials Research Society. “MRS is a leader in delivering innovative materials research through its meetings and publications, and we will continue to focus on this strength. Cambridge University Press brings to the partnership an unparalleled international reach in education and science, a powerful electronic platform serving the science community, a commitment to building with MRS a broader publications portfolio in the area of materials and a dedication to education and public outreach. In short, Cambridge shares our values in service to advancing materials science and education. We look forward to collaborating with Cambridge on enhancing MRS’s current publications line and developing new products.”

“We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with MRS, who are without doubt a major force in materials science publishing” said Simon Ross, Global Journals Director at Cambridge. “When you speak to any enthusiastic materials scientist they will tell you that the scope of materials research is unbounded, it covers everything, so the opportunities that will follow from this collaboration are potentially huge. We have already started to build a vision of the future. Together we will continue to innovate through technology and seek new ways to reach existing and new markets with the very best services and content in materials science.”

Phil Meyler, Publishing Director for Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Cambridge, stressed further the importance of this partnership: “Materials science and engineering are critical in addressing many of today’s most pressing issues, such as energy, climate change, and the development of biomedical technology. The scientists and engineers who make up MRS are spearheading many of these efforts, and we look forward to working with the Society to publish a range of print and electronic products for a truly global community of students, researchers, and practitioners.”
