Materials Research Society Names Peter F. Green as Inaugural Editor-in-Chief of MRS Communications

The Materials Research Society (MRS) has named Peter F. Green as editor-in-chief of its newest publication, MRS Communications.

Green is the Vincent T. and Gloria M. Gorguze Professor of Engineering and Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. He is also the 
Director of the University of Michigan’s DOE Energy Frontier Research Center: Center for Solar and Thermal Energy Conversion in Complex Materials.

Green said: “I am pleased that MRS Communications is now a reality and am honored to have the opportunity to shape its editorial direction in the coming years. Our goal is to develop MRS 
Communications
 into the primary journal for materials researchers around the world–-where scientists aspire to publish their best work and where readers expect to first learn about high 
impact, cutting-edge materials advances. The founding Principal Editors of this journal are composed of outstanding materials researchers. I look forward to working with them to develop 
a journal that meets—and exceeds—the high expectations of this exciting new endeavor.”

Educated at Cornell University and Hunter College NY, Green began his working life at Sandia National Laboratories before moving on to teaching roles at the University of Texas and then to 
his present positions. His extensive list of awards and recognitions includes Elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Ceramic Society. Green also has a long history of involvement with the Materials Research Society, including MRS President in 2006.

His professional service has embraced a myriad of prestigious roles including most recently:

  • Member, Advisory Board, ACS Petroleum Research Fund (2010-present)
  • Member, Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology (VCAT) at National Institute 
    of Standards and Technology (NIST) (2008-2011)
  • Science and Technology Working Group (STWG) of the US-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission (2011)
  • Member, Board on Physics and Astronomy, National Academies (2005-2011)

MRS Communications was launched by the Materials Research Society (MRS) and Cambridge University Press in 2011 to serve the international materials research community. It is a fullcolor, online-only publication, with papers appearing immediately on state-of-the-art platform Cambridge Journals Online (CJO). This offers authors an exceptionally rapid review and publication process, while also providing a swift and direct channel to the global MRS audience.

The journal establishes future directions for the broad materials science community by bringing together researchers and professionals from the full range of materials fields including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and engineering, to identify and report on trends in research.MRS Communications is the first of many new publishing ventures expected to result from the recently formed partnership between MRS and Cambridge University Press. The introductory issue is scheduled for fall 2011 and will join an existing suite of industry-leading MRS publications---MRS BulletinJournal of Materials Research, the MRS Online Proceedings Library and Materials360®.
