Functional inorganic nanoparticle-polymer composites can have diverse structures and highly tunable, actively coupled mechanical, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties that cannot be obtained from polymers or nanoparticles alone. This symposium will focus on two fundamental aspects of functional inorganic nanoparticle-polymer composites: 1) Engineered structures, such as the use of polymers to control the self assembly or the use of nanoparticles to control the phase behaviors of polymers, and 2) Coupled properties, where there is active coupling between the properties of the nanoparticles and the polymer beyond dilution of the nanoparticles in an inert polymer matrix. This symposium will also focus on applications of inorganic nanoparticle-polymer composites, particularly in energy, electronics, biology, and medicine.
