Negative Refractive-Index Metamaterials--From Concepts to Applications

The tutorial will cover the new design concepts and novel fabrication techniques used in construction of new classes of composite materials (metamaterials) with unusual electromagnetic properties. It will begin with a general overview of photonic metamaterials, followed by a brief background and history of this field. Some of the salient features of the negative index materials from microwave to optical wavelengths will be reviewed. Because of the unusual electromagnetic properties resulting from the negative index of refraction associated with the NIM materials, many unusual physics properties have been studied theoretically and experimentally; their successful validation has led to a variety of proposals for new components. David Smith will introduce the fundamental background on the physics-driven design of metamaterials and negative index of refraction by effective medium theory. Xiang Zhang will discuss the state-of-the-art manufacturing technology in microwave and optical NIMs. Richard Ziolkowski will conclude by addressing the challenges and opportunities for NIMs in microwave and optical applications.
