Executive Staff

MRS Headquarters is committed to partnering with the Board of Directors and the Operating Committees as we fulfill the MRS Mission for the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research to improve the quality of life. The Headquarters staff is functionally organized into the departments shown below. Each department contains a professional staff that is dedicated to delivering the highest quality meetings, publications, communications and logistical services for the Society.

Todd M. Osman

Todd M. Osman became Executive Director of MRS in September 2008. Prior to joining MRS, Dr. Osman co-founded The Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center and was Technical Director for The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS). He also spent 11 years at United States Steel Corporation as a researcher and technical manager, conducting original research and coordinating cooperative R&D programs. He has authored over 25 articles on topics including commercial and social impact of nanomaterials, materials for nuclear power, computational materials science and engineering, product development and mechanical metallurgy.

Dr. Osman is an ex-officio member of the MRS Board of Director and is the chief staff officer.

Patricia A. Hastings, Director of Meetings Activities, joined the Materials Research Society Executive Team in 1999 as the Director of Meeting Activities. Pat’s previous 20 years of broad-based experience includes executive positions in meeting planning, sales, marketing and customer service in both private industry and association spheres. Her notable association experience included 5 years at the Society of Automotive Engineers (now, simply “SAE”) and 3 years with the Iron and Steel Society (now AIST). Pat is the in-house lead for the development of all MRS meetings-related scientific content, working with materials research volunteers to create dynamic technical programming. She also has primary budgetary responsibility and oversight for the meeting infrastructure and logistics.

Paula A. Mammarella

Paula Mammarella, Director of Finance, IT and Administration, joined MRS in 2008. Ms. Mammarella has over 23 years of experience, including 18 years in banking and finance and 5 years of information technology, IT security and risk management. She has held positions of Senior Credit Officer for a community bank as well as Internal Audit Manager. Ms. Mammarella was an Associate National Bank Examiner for the Comptroller of the Currency and has led teams of internal auditors in compliance efforts related to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and has advised companies regarding regulatory compliance, security of information assets and technology risk. Ms. Mammarella holds a B.S. in Finance from the Pennsylvania State University, an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters of Information Technology Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Ms. Mammarella directs the Accounting and Finance, Member Services, Information Technology, Human Resources and Payroll functions and heads Facilities Management for MRS headquarters. She also works directly with the MRS Board of Directors with respect to reporting, budgetary items, compliance and governance matters for the Society.

Gail A, Oare

Gail A. Oare, Director of Publications and Marketing, has 35 years of experience in publishing and marketing with technical societies, industry and consulting. Prior to joining MRS, she was managing editor of JOM (TMS) and worked in marketing and publishing with Instrument Society of America (ISA). She has developed medical manuals and marketing materials; executive training programs, films and translations; and worked as a freelance author and editor. Gail joined MRS approximately 25 years ago to help the Society establish its publishing program, including the MRS Symposium Proceedings, the MRS Bulletin, Journal of Materials Research and other books. She has organized conference sessions on technical publishing and been an invited speaker on international book marketing. She has served as both Director of Meetings and Director of Membership Affairs. Today she oversees MRS’s journal and book publishing, website and e-communications, marketing, public relations and corporate programs (exhibits, advertising and sponsorships).

Sandra DeVincent Wolf, Director of Membership Development, joined MRS in 2004. Dr. Wolf first served MRS as Director of Planning, partnering with the Board of Directors and its governing committees in their strategic planning and operational oversight. To MRS, Dr. Wolf brings 15 years of experience in various areas of materials science and engineering including application-driven R&D at NASA Lewis Research Center, R&D management and operations development at a high-tech manufacturing start-up, and materials support and systems design for the Naval Nuclear Program. She has authored numerous scholarly publications on her research and given invited talks on topics of relevance to the association management community. Dr. Wolf has extensive volunteer experience and has served in committee, board and officer roles in both community-based organizations and professional associations. Dr. Wolf is responsible for developing strategic approaches to membership programs, coordinating advocacy and outreach initiatives, and creating key services for the materials community.
