In this article, we describe the microscopic theory of thermal conduction in insulating solids. We will discuss the frequency- and temperature-dependence of important phonon relaxation mechanisms, which determine the mean free path. The theoretical model will be used to present certain rules for choosing high thermal conductivity single crystals. The theory will then be extended to provide a brief discussion of the understanding and control of thermal conductivity in lowdimensional systems and in polycrystalline solids.
