Bruce M. Foxman and Michael D. WardThe design and synthesis of solid-state materials constructed from molecules has emerged as an important frontier of materials research. Molecular design principles offer great versatility to manipulate molecules into various shapes and chemistries. In turn, these building blocks can be combined to systematically tailor solid-state properties and functions. Furthermore, the use of molecular components may provide considerable savings by reducing fabrication cost and enhancing performance. The articles in this issue of MRS Bulletin cover recent discoveries and developments based on materials whose properties hinge on the characteristics of their molecular constituents. These materials promise significant advances in several technologies of substantial commercial interest, including organic light-emitting diodes, nonlinear optics, gas separations, chiral separations, molecular magnets, and microfabrication.
We invite you to view the introductory article for this issue, "Molecules in the Solid State," by Bruce M. Foxman and Michael D. Ward, Guest Editors.
