Symposium SM4—Engineering Biointerfaces with Nanomaterials

For many years specifically designed materials have been used to affect cell adhesion, proliferation and morphology. These materials are of great importance for many biomedical and biotechnological applications like implants, artificial organs, advanced medical systems, bio fuel cells. Recent studies have shown the need to develop material platforms which are able to communicate effectively with cells to control and program cell response. This requires development of new nanomaterials and high sensitive analytical systems for localized and time-resolved observation of interfacial phenomena on a molecular level. In addition a better understanding of the signal delivered by the nanomaterial and of the corresponding transduction by the biosystem is required.

This symposium will discuss recent advancements and trends in material design, surface engineering and signal transduction to find design rules for the realization of functional bio-interfaces.
