Materials in Focus

Research Highlights: Perovskites
MRS Bulletin presents the impact of a selection of recent advances in this burgeoning field of perovskites.

2016 Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry: A materials view
This year’s Nobel prizes in chemistry and physics that honor the use of topological concepts were also a win for materials research.

Battery electrode material boosts platinum catalyst’s performance with a light squeeze
Squeezing Pt nanoparticles on a lithium cobalt oxide substrate nearly doubles its catalytic activity.

Semiconducting polymer for skin-like wearable electronics is stretchable, healable
The polymer has semiconducting units, which transport charge, connected by amorphous 2,6-pyridine dicarboxamide regions.

Bayesian inference supercedes Rietveld technique in crystallographic structure refinement
By applying Bayesian inference, the researchers develop a new refinement algorithm for crystallographic diffraction data.

Policy Focus

Brexit leaves UK scientific research community in uncertainty
Many scientists campaigned against “Brexit” on the grounds that the UK is a major beneficiary of the EU’s support for research.

OF INTEREST TO THE MATERIALS COMMUNITY

Cleanup technologies following Fukushima
Melted fuel debris must be cleared and stored, thousands of tons of contaminated water must be managed, and the reactors must be protected to stop any more radioactive material from escaping. Only then can engineers get to the heart of the problem—decommissioning.

Taking engineering to industry
Becoming CEO of Rolls-Royce has taken Warren East CBE FREng from electronic chips to jet engines. This change in industries isn’t as dramatic as it might seem as, after all, they both operate at the cutting edge of engineering. As he explains to Michael Kenward OBE, it is the engineering that matters, but then you have to turn it into something that can be commercialized.

NEW PRODUCTS FOCUS

New Economical Probes for Routine AFM Measurements
Asylum Research recently announced the release of the new economical atomic force microscope probes—Econo Board Probes. These probes are available in eight different models, are budget-priced that rival the performance of more expensive premium probes, making them suitable for nearly all routine AFM measurements, and since they are inexpensive, they are also perfect for training or education.
