Materials in Focus

Liquid metal deposition process developed for wafer-scale 2D semiconductors
This room-temperature liquid metal deposition method deposits and simultaneously patterns a semiconducting metal oxide on almost any substrate.

Rubber-like neural implants bend and flex with the spine
The probes consist of elastomers thermally drawn into a fiber further protected in polymer cladding.

Size matters in mechanical behavior of bulk metallic glasses
BMGs tested with ligament widths comparable or below critical bending thickness of a given glass should be considered size- and geometry-dependent.

Adjusting chemical disorder stabilizes multiferroic magnetic spirals at higher temperatures

Changing the annealing rate induces disorder in the multiferroic YBaCuFeO5, which leads to the stabilization of the spiral phase at room temperature.

Nano Focus: Electron diffraction enables localization of hydrogen atoms in nanocrystals

The new method enables researchers to calculate the diffracted intensities and the difference potential map.

High pressure and small spaces create order from disorder

A new material separates ethanol dimers in one channel of zeolite and water tetramers in another channel.

Policy Focus

How science fares in the US budget deal
Overall, the deal staves off major cuts for federal science agencies.

OF INTEREST TO THE MATERIALS COMMUNITY

Sustainable manufacturing conference in South Africa highlights importance of materials
Specific needs and sustainability challenges vary regionally, as do the resources available to meet these challenges.

Water in the desert
How can materials science contribute to desalination?

Latest research breakthroughs reported at the 2017 MRS Spring Meeting
The Materials Research Society held its Spring Meeting on April 17-21, 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona. See the highlights reported on social media by participants, presenters, and others as well as reports from additional MRS news sources.

Material Gains
High-performance technology and long-term societal challenges are combining to bring about an array of exciting developments in materials science. These leaps forward are facilitating fresh ideas to improve what we have and create new things that we don’t. 2017 MRS President Susan Trolier-McKinstry discusses cold sintering as one example.

MRS: The strange matter of materials science
Materials science shapes the world as we know it. Todd Osman has dedicated his career to advancing this interdisciplinary field and, as Executive Director of the Materials Research Society, he is keen to inspire people to engage with the wide range of world-class research in this area.
