For half a century, MRS has proudly represented the interests of thousands of materials researchers across disciplines, generations and continents. In collaboration with our global Membership, we have forged an unparalleled legacy of innovation at the leading edge of materials research and look forward to building on our momentum as we continue to invest in our field for years to come.

MRS is grateful to every Member—past, present and future—for being the driving force behind the first 50 years of the Society, and we celebrate the possibilities for our community in the next 50 and beyond.

MRS founders were animated by the desire to create a forum where specialists could meet and expand their mindset to foster innovative thinking at the forefront of materials development. Their idea is relevant more than ever, and for the years to come I envision MRS as a society in continuous evolution and responsive to the social and environmental implications of new materials and technology. More than anything, a society where passionate members and volunteers are engaging in exciting and dynamic collaborations across boundaries. With your help MRS will continue to develop and implement new ideas and directions for the many years ahead of us!

As we celebrate our impact, the important work of supporting the goals of materials researchers spanning disciplines, sectors, experience levels and over 90 countries continues—through unmatched professional development, diverse awards programs, and a multitude of career-accelerating opportunities.

We’re proud to promote the cross-pollination of ideas in this vibrant Member community, delivering on our mission to engage every researcher at all points along their career trajectory—from students to seasoned professionals to Nobel and Kavli Prize Laureates—and advance materials that improve the global quality of life.

Our fiftieth anniversary is a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come as a community, as well as the work in front of us. MRS stands committed to creating a welcoming environment where all Members can influence the future of materials research as well as advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of the Society.

The work we do touches every corner of the globe, and it is paramount to represent the entire materials research community and support our colleagues going forward. Looking ahead, MRS will continue to foster ongoing innovation by actively engaging our global Membership, supporting the careers of underrepresented researchers, investing in community actions to address bias and inequity, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workforce.
