Science Writing Workshops

Learn the techniques required to take any story—whether it be a news story, journalistic article, blog entry, or profile of a scientist—to the next level.

This is an interactive one-day workshop for researchers, scientists, science educators and students who are interested in journalism and science writing. Any article, science-themed or otherwise, is most effective when it tells a story. Details in the story are most vibrant when they're gleaned from interviews.

This workshop explores various categories of journalistic science writing and identifies effective skill-sets for working with editorial staff.  Through practice, participants will learn effective writing strategies that enhance storytelling in science writing. The instructors demonstrate effective interviewing skills through questioning techniques, strategies, and technical tools that elicit targeted information. The workshop includes opportunities to practice your interviewing skills.

Workshops are offered periodically at the MRS Spring Meeting and MRS Fall Meeting. Sessions are limited to 12 participants and preregistration is required. You do not need to be registered for the meeting to attend the Science Writing Workshop. If you wish to be added to a mailing list to receive information about upcoming workshops and preregistration, contact us.
