Symposium EP04—Novel Photonic and Plasmonic Materials Enabling New Functionalities

During the past decade, our ability to control light on the micro- and nanoscale has led to a variety of plasmonic devices, cloaks, and meta-lenses, which has also enabled a deeper understanding of the fundamental limits of such devices. Different conceptual approaches have arisen based on engineering either the material’s response directly or by manipulating the amplitude and phase arbitrarily at an interface to achieve the desired response. This symposium aims to bring researchers together to explore the fundamental limits of light manipulation, to determine the resulting optoelectronic device opportunities, and to establish how materials can be engineered to achieve high-level functionality. An emphasis will be placed on emerging materials and devices enabled by these materials including, but not limited to: alternative materials for plasmonics and photonics, device applications of metasurfaces, non-reciprocal materials, index and epsilon near zero materials, quantum plasmonics, radiative cooling, and hot carriers in metals.

Topics will include:

  • Alternative plasmonic and photonic materials (e.g. metal alloys, transition metals, etc.)
  • Device applications of metasurfaces
  • Actively controlled metamaterials and metasurfaces
  • Index Near Zero (INZ) and Epsilon Near Zero (ENZ) photonics
  • Hyperbolic materials/metamaterials/metasurfaces
  • 2D and layered materials
  • Non-reciprocal metamaterials
  • Materials for enhanced hot carrier effects in chemistry and/or for devices
  • Materials for modified radiative heating and cooling
  • All-dielectric and/or nonlinear metasurfaces
  • Plasmonic and photonics for energy (e.g. photovoltaics, catalysts, etc.)
  • Quantum plasmonics
  • Chiral photonics
  • Tamm plasmon polaritons
