2019 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit

PowerPoint™ Karaoke

Thursday, December 5
5:30 pm – 6:45 pm
Sheraton, 2nd Floor, Constitution B

PowerPoint Karaoke challenges both the author of a slide and the presenter to improve their communication skills while under a strict time limit.

This fall, join us for an exciting two-part event: MRS Frontiers Reception—Building Communities, Featuring PowerPoint Karaoke.

Immediately following the karaoke competition, there will be plenty of time to chat, laugh and network with other participants at the Frontiers Reception. Enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres while forging new MRS communities around emerging topics in materials science.

How Can I Get Involved?

Participant

  • Complete the application and indicate if you are submitting a slide, willing to be a presenter or will do both
  • Let us know which Frontiers Reception Hot Topic category you will address in your slide.
    • Sustainability
    • Artificial intelligence for materials development
    • Quantum and materials including quantum information technologies (e.g., for computing, networking, sensing) and quantum materials (materials that exhibit quantum behavior)
    • Biomaterials including 3D bioprinting, bioelectronics and synthetic biology
    • Responsive and adaptive materials
  • If submitting a PowerPoint slide, please list your title on the form, not on your slide. We want the presenter to suggest a title during the presentation.

Audience (the best looking face in the crowd)

Are you curious what PowerPoint Karaoke is about, but a bit shy? Come by and cheer all the presenters. They need you because a presentation needs an audience, right? And your votes are needed for the People’s Choice winner!

Guidelines for Participants

You must adhere to the MRS Code of Conduct. Any violation of these rules will lead to a direct disqualification without further notice. This is also true for the slides. If provided slides violate the MRS Code of Conduct, they will be discarded and the author will get a second chance. After that, no further chances are granted.

Your Slide

  1. Only one slide is permitted per attendee.
  2. The usage of this PowerPoint template is mandatory.
  3. Submit in PPT and PDF format.
  4. There will be an author's prize, so please make your slide as clear as possible so your content is obvious to the presenter.
  5. Deadline to enter the event is November 29, 2019.

Presentation Topics

In order to spark conversations around the Frontiers Reception topics, PowerPoint Karaoke is asking slide authors to emphasize how your slide content is related to one of the following Hot Topic categories.

  1. Sustainability
  2. Artificial intelligence for materials development
  3. Quantum and materials for quantum information technologies (e.g., for computing, networking, sensing) and quantum materials (materials that exhibit quantum behavior)
  4. Bio and materials including 3D bioprinting, bioelectronics and synthetic biology
  5. Responsive and adaptive materials

Your Presentation

  1. Our next speaker is ...
You will be announced and have a brief introduction so that everyone knows who you are, where you are from and what you are working on.
  2. Ready, set, go!
You have three minutes to present the slide. The moment the slide shows up, your clock has started. Get focused and perform like you never did before. We are sure it will be wonderful!
  3. Please do not comment on the quality of the provided slide you are presenting. The challenge of this event is to get the best information out of  the slide, and someone might have worked hard to submit the best he or she could do.
  4. Deadline to enter is November 29, 2019.

The Chocolate at the end is … PRIZES!

You made it! Everyone is cheering and fascinated by the presentation! But this is not the end. Every participant will get a certificate of participation and you have the chance to win prizes.

Prizes of $300 and certificates will be awarded to the best presenter and the best author, selected by both the audience and the judges.

The winning presenter will not automatically define the winning slide author. An outstanding presentation performance can be better than a presentation with a perfect slide.

Awards selected by the Audience

Make some noise! The loudest cheering defines the audience winner. The noise level will be collected after all presentations are given.

Awards selected by Jury

The jury will announce the winning presenter according to the best performance and author for the clearest slide.
