Symposium EL04—Emerging Chalcogenide Electronic Materials—From Theory to Applications

The modern information age has been powered by covalent semiconductors such as silicon and III-Vs. Despite this success, harnessing phenomena such as magnetism, superconductivity, metal-insulator transitions, ferroelectricity, etc. (and coupled combinations thereof) for future applications requires a thorough understanding of electronic materials with varying degrees of ionic bonding. Chalcogenide electronic materials feature bonding that is intermediate between covalent semiconductors (such as silicon) and ionic materials (such as oxides and halides). This symposium will bring together scientists and engineers from academia, national labs and industry to discuss the status and the outlook for research and applications of emerging chalcogenide electronic materials, with an emphasis on the common challenges and opportunities in the field of complex-structured chalcogenide semiconductors. The symposium will cover a wide range of studies including theory, materials synthesis and characterization, devices, and applications.

This symposium will emphasize work on sulfides, selenides, and tellurides, and multi-anionic systems. Work on oxides will be included as it relates to chalcogenides more broadly. For instance, this symposium would be an appropriate home for work on layered oxy-chalcogenide materials that are of interest for superconductivity and thermoelectricity, or for anion alloys that are of interest for engineering carrier-selective contacts.

Topics will include:

  • Computational discovery of new chalcogenide materials
  • Advanced computational approaches to describe physical and chemical properties of chalcogenides: from atomistic to continuum approaches
  • Novel synthesis methods for chalcogenides: from nanostructures to bulk crystals
  • Advanced characterization tools to understand physical and chemical properties of chalcogenides
  • Applications of chalcogenides in computing, photonics, sensing, and energy
  • Emergent and correlated phenomena in chalcogenides, including density waves, superconductivity, ferroelectricity, and magnetism
  • A tutorial complementing this symposium is tentatively planned.
