Call for Papers

Abstract submission will be open May 16 - June 13, 2023.

The 2023 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit will be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts, November 26 – December 2, 2023 with the virtual portion held online from December 5-7.

Many symposium proposals were submitted, out of which 64 exciting symposia were chosen by the Meeting Chairs for the technical program. The symposia are grouped into the following topical clusters:

Characterization
The characterization cluster features four symposia covering important topics including in situ transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography, advanced characterization methods of energy material applications, and emerging electron microscopy techniques for quantum materials.

Materials Computing and Data Science
This cluster features six symposia featuring AI-assisted experimentation, automated experimentation in microscopy and with neutrons and X-rays, integrating ML and simulations, data driven research for energy, materials by design, and in a new symposium, polymer informatics.

Electronics, Optics and Photonics
This larger cluster features 20 symposia with topical coverage that includes 1D and 2D materials and properties, metamaterials and metasurfaces, ultrawide bandgap semiconductors, organic semiconductors and mixed ionic-electronic conductors, materials for neuromorphic electronics, colloidal materials, chiral materials, optoelectronics, photonics, plasmonics and more.

Energy and Sustainability
The energy and sustainability cluster features ten symposia addressing aspects of solid state batteries, Li-ion batteries and recycling, halide perovskites; low-dimensional and crystalline energy materials, materials for emergent applications in large-scale hydrogen; emerging electrocatalytic materials; sustainable, biodegradable and resorbable materials and energy solutions for unconventional applications.

Quantum Materials, Interfaces and Topological Systems
This cluster includes four symposia on excitonic materials, higher-order topological structures in real space, 2D topological materials, and space, charge and time-resolved spectroscopies for quantum materials.

Soft Materials and Biomaterials
This cluster features 11 symposia that touch on concepts ranging from biomimetics and frameworks for imaging, encapsulation and delivery, hydrogels and soft materials, translational neuroelectronics, neuro and bio-electronics, biomolecular electronics, bio-based polymers and materials, additive manufacturing and future food materials and much more.

Structural and Functional Materials
The structural and functional materials cluster includes eight symposia. Topics covered include additive manufacturing, inorganic materials, plasma technology for materials science and engineering, reactive materials engineering. Symposia also feature crystallization and assembly at interfaces, infrared materials and devices, autonomous materials, and architected materials in extreme environments.

Broader Impact
The symposium here is focused on early career development in academia and industry, that we hope will be of wide interest to the community.

Symposium X
Frontiers of Materials Research will feature presentations aimed at a broad audience and on topics at the forefront of research on materials science and engineering.

To complement the symposia, tutorials will provide detailed information and instruction on particularly exciting areas of research and the Exhibit will showcase products and services of interest to the scientific community.  The Meeting, Exhibits and Posters will be located at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.

Meeting attendees will find Boston to be a very accessible and attractive host.  A wide array of restaurants, nightlife, cultural, and sporting events are just steps away from the Convention Center and hotels. The region also offers an abundance of pre- and post-meeting touring options.  It’s a perfect mix of interaction, insights, inspiration, and indulgence!

We look forward to welcoming you to Boston!

Sincerely,

Derya Baran, Alexandra Boltasseva, Julien Pernot, Kristofer Reyes and Jonathan Rivnay
