More than 8 billion metric tons of plastics have been produced in the last 70 years, amounting to roughly 25,000 times the weight of the Empire State Building. Nearly 80% of it has ended up in landfills or the environment. 

 Can plastics play a role in a sustainable future? Their durability, light weight and affordability have revolutionized industries and, in some cases, reduced resource consumption. But their fossil fuel origins, environmental persistence and endocrine disrupting properties may belie their potential in achieving sustainability.
