Two dimensional van der Waals materials have emerged as a playground for observing and manipulating collective quantum phases. A large part of this is due to the incredible diversity in materials and the number of tuning knobs available to manipulate electronic structure in these materials. In this talk, I will discuss recent developments in tuning electronic structure of this materials class by using strain and twist control in heterostructures of van der Waals materials, and the emergent quantum phases that can result from applying these tuning knobs.
