Overview of Research Opportunities—DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences
The Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) supports fundamental research that provides the foundations for new energy technologies and supports the DOE mission in energy, environment and national security. This presentation will provide an overview of the BES materials sciences research portfolio, including national user facilities that are supported by BES. Research opportunities identified by recent workshops will be summarized. The presentation will also provide guidance on the grant application process, including white papers, as well as online resources for principal investigators.

This presentation introduces several different opportunities available to researchers at international institutions, notably programs such as traditional research grants, conference support grants, travel support and international student exchanges. Current strategic emphasis areas and the corresponding hot topics in materials research (e.g., low-dimensional electronics and photonic materials for quantum information systems) are highlighted, and the talk concludes with suggestions for getting your ideas submitted to and considered by the appropriate DoD international research office.
