2020 MRS Spring Meeting

Call for Papers

In March of this year, MRS leadership made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 MRS Spring Meeting in Phoenix for the safety and well-being our members, attendees, staff and the materials community, and to reschedule as much of the program as possible into a special 2020 Joint MRS Spring and Fall Meeting.

This one-time-only joint event will take place in Boston, from Saturday, November 28 through Friday, December 4—expanding by one day to provide programming capacity. The program flow for each symposium is under development and will be announced in early July.

Symposium NM02—Colloidal Nanoparticles—From Synthesis to Applications

Nanoparticle materials with controlled size, shape, and composition are now a ubiquitous building block for fabrication of hierarchical materials and understanding structure-property relation at different length scales. Ordered assemblies of functional nanoparticles exhibit collective electronic and optical behaviors for applications in nanoelectronics and nanophotonics. Successful integration of nanoparticles into engineered battery electrodes, durable films/coatings, and inks requires fundamental understanding to achieve surface functionality, reproducible assembly, and mechanical robustness and patternability. Fundamental issues related to size, shape, core/shell structure, surface chemistry, etc critically determine the property and applications of the nanoparticle and their assemblies. To address these issues, this symposium will cover the general topics of nanoparticle synthesis, sintering, functionalization, characterizations, and applications. Specifically, this symposium will focus on (1) fundamental synthetic and functionalization strategies to manipulate size, shape, core/shell structure, surface chemistry to achieve enhanced function and property; (2) structural and property characterizations of nanoparticle growth, assembly, and interaction; and (3) nanoelectronic and nanophotonic applications.

Topics will include:

  • Nanoparticle based crystal growth and assembly dynamics
  • Solution synthesis and engineering to control packing symmetry, external framework, thin films, and property
  • Large area integration of nanoparticle assembly, patterning, and thin films/coatings
  • Printing of nanoparticle nanoelectronics and nanophotonics.
  • Advanced spectroscopy and transport studies on electronic structure, carrier dynamics, energy transfers and charge separation processes of nanoparticles and their assemblies
  • Structural and property characterizations of nanoparticle assemblies/thin films/coatings/platforms
