2020 MRS Spring Meeting

Call for Papers

In March of this year, MRS leadership made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 MRS Spring Meeting in Phoenix for the safety and well-being our members, attendees, staff and the materials community, and to reschedule as much of the program as possible into a special 2020 Joint MRS Spring and Fall Meeting.

This one-time-only joint event will take place in Boston, from Saturday, November 28 through Friday, December 4—expanding by one day to provide programming capacity. The program flow for each symposium is under development and will be announced in early July.

Symposium S.EL02—Advanced Manufacturing of Mixed Dimensional Heterostructures

Heterostructures composed of 1D, 2D, and 3D materials exhibit the unique functionalities that cannot be obtained by pure 1D or 2D or 3D materials. Especially, they alter substantial changes in the electrical, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties resulting in intriguing properties. Thus, great deal of efforts has been made to form unprecedented device architectures via heterostructuring mixed dimensional materials. To obtain mixed dimensional system with high quality interfaces, significant progress has been made on in-situ synthesis, transfer or growth techniques. These are critical to secure extensive and flexible design of mixed heterostructures. So far, unique physical properties and new device functionalities have been discovered. In this program, we offer the opportunity to share the progress in research of heterostructures which include the methods for synthesis, growth, transfer, lift-off, and even scale-up. The symposium will offer an important opportunity for speakers and audiences to expand the concept from the existing 2D heterostructures concept to novel mixed heterostructures.

The symposium will cover the complete range of topics related to heterogenous integration of mixed dimensional materials from fundamentals to applications. Interdisciplinary topics related to physics, materials science and engineering will be connected by invited talks in order to accelerate the development of manufacturing of mixed-dimensional heterostructures and the application of them. The session will be also dedicated to motivate a discussion toward emerging technology to develop new types of heterogeneously integrated structures using 1D, 2D, and 3D materials.

Topics will include:

  • Growth of 1D, 2D, and 3D materials
  • Van der Waals epitaxy & Remote epitaxy
  • Advanced transfer/assembly of 1D, 2D, and 3D materials
  • Semiconductor lift-off technology (mechanical, optical, chemical)
  • Heterogeneous integration of mixed heterostructures and their applications
  • Thermal/optical/electrical properties of mixed heterostructures
  • Manufacturing of 2D or 3D membrane technology
  • Electronic and Optoelectronic devices based on mixed heterostructures
  • A tutorial complementing this symposium is tentatively planned.
