2020 MRS Spring Meeting

Call for Papers

In March of this year, MRS leadership made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 MRS Spring Meeting in Phoenix for the safety and well-being our members, attendees, staff and the materials community, and to reschedule as much of the program as possible into a special 2020 Joint MRS Spring and Fall Meeting.

This one-time-only joint event will take place in Boston, from Saturday, November 28 through Friday, December 4—expanding by one day to provide programming capacity. The program flow for each symposium is under development and will be announced in early July.

Symposium S.EN06—Rational Designed Hierarchical Nanostructures for Photocatalytic System

Photocatalysis plays an important role in a diverse range of applications including emerging technologies related to clean energy, sustainable environment and petrochemical industry such as water splitting, CO2 reduction, Nitrogen fixation, pollutant treatment energy conversion, and organic synthesis. In nature, photosynthesis is achieved by broad light absorption and highly efficient charge transfer processes by constructing a hierarchical nanostructure. Heterojunctions and Z-scheme systems based on rational designed hierarchical nanostructure materials have been emerged in the field of the solar energy conversion, to enhance photogenerated charge carrier separation and transfer efficiency.

Furthermore, a better understanding of the photophysical processes at the interface between two semiconductors in heterojunction and Z-scheme, and between the semiconductor nanostructure and electrolyte, will be beneficial to optimize hierarchical photocatalytic materials in the future. In this sense, rational design and preparation of photocatalytic materials with tailored structure and functions, fundamental understanding of both materials’ work mechanism, and of the interface between solid/solid and solid/liquid are crucial for the development of novel photocatalytic materials, devices, and system.

Therefore, this symposium provides an international platform to present and discuss the latest research and prospective activates on the nanostructured photocatalytic materials. This program will address latest advances in new narrow bandgap photocatalysts design and construction, hierarchical nanostructures for heterojunction and Z-Scheme, fundamental understanding of photocatalytic mechanisms, and theoretical modeling and simulation.

This symposium brings together top leaders in science and technology, interested newcomers and worldwide experts; and it will further expand the interest and progress in this area.

Topics will include:

  • Novel organic aggregates for photocatalysts with narrow band gap: design, synthesis and self-assembly;
  • Heterojunction nanostructures for enhanced photocatalytic performance;​
  • Constructing Z-Scheme type nanostructures for high efficient photocatalytic materials;​
  • Inorganic/organic, inorganic/biological hybrid nanostructure for solar conversion.
  • Metal/semiconductor hybrid nanostructures for photocatalysis​
  • Rational designed core/shell nanostructure for photocatalysis​
  • Spectroscopy technology on mechanism understanding: charge transfer and recombination process​
  • Theoretical calculation and simulation on the photocatalytic system​
