Symposium F.EN09-Developing In Situ and Operando Methodology for Observation of Energy Conversion, Storage and Transport Processes in Materials and Devices

The increasing demand for sustainable energy requires new materials and devices for energy conversion, storage and transport. During their synthesis, manufacturing and operation, these systems can undergo considerable electronic and structural transformations, with corresponding property changes that can be beneficial or detrimental. Advances in in situ and operando characterization now can reveal the microscopic mechanisms of these time transformations. This symposium will focus on the development of novel or improved instrumentation and methodologies together with data analysis, theory and modeling to reveal energy-relevant phenomena. Our goal is to highlight new science, techniques, and technologies that provide insight into microscopic and nanoscopic processes in materials and devices for energy conversion, storage and transport.

Topics will include:

  • Instruments and methods employing scattering, diffraction, spectroscopy and imaging using X-rays, electrons, ions or neutrons including techniques to study ultrafast processes in situ or operando. This includes in situ and environmental TEM and SEM. Materials and devices studied in situ or operando include but are not limited to
  • Batteries
  • Heterogeneous catalysts
  • Solar cells
  • Fuel cells
  • Solid state lighting
  • A tutorial complementing this symposium is tentatively planned.
