NOVA, the world-renowned public television science series, partnered with the Materials Research Society to introduce the science of materials to the general public.

MAKING STUFF: Stronger, Smaller, Cleaner, Smarter first aired in 2011. This highly-popular four-part series set NOVA viewership records and led to rebroadcasts in 2012 and 2013.

  Encourages "viewers" to become active "doers" in the process of science and engineering through after-school and community programs for middle and high school youth, families, educators, engineers and scientists.

The Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net) was a 10-year project (2005-2015) funded by the National Science Foundation to create a national community of researchers and informal science educators dedicated to fostering public awareness, engagement, and understanding of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. The Materials Research Society was the only professional science society among the 14 core partner organizations.

MRS played an instrumental role in NISE Net, linking scientists interested in public outreach with informal science education projects, offering authoritative scientific information and providing meeting venues for NISE Net activities.

In 2016 the Network transitioned to a new, ongoing identity as the National Informal STEM Education Network. Still known as NISE Net, but now Network partners across the United States engage audiences in a wide range of STEM topics through the NISE Net website and a variety of previous and current projects.

The Materials Research Society supported  Inside Science as an underwriter from 2005-2015.

Originally known as Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science (DBIS), Inside Science is an editorially independent nonprofit science news service run out of the American Institute of Physics.

They produce breaking news stories, features, essays, op-eds, documentaries, animations, and news videos that appear on insidescience.org as well as on partner sites across the web, in print, and through syndicated news organizations. Everything they write and produce is for the general public.
