Self-healing mechanisms for Ge-Sb-S chalcogenide glasses upon gamma irradiation

The paper, which first appeared in the April 17 issue of the MRS Bulletin, was featured in a post on Alfred University's website on August 21. It was then featured on the cover and as an Impact Article in the August issue (image to left).

The paper outlines research of chalcogenide glasses and their reaction to exposure to gamma irradiation. Chalcogenide glasses are made up of chalcogen elements—sulfur, selenium, and tellurium—alloyed with elements like germanium and arsenic to create optical glass materials. Uses of chalcogenide glasses include infrared detectors, moldable infrared optics (such as lenses) and infrared optical fibers.
