MRS 50th Anniversary: A Half-Century of Progress in Materials Research

Celebrating the possibilities for our community in the next 50 years—and beyond!

For half a century, MRS has proudly represented the interests of thousands of materials researchers across disciplines, generations and continents. In collaboration with our global Membership, we have forged an unparalleled legacy of innovation at the leading edge of materials research and look forward to building on our momentum as we continue to invest in our field for years to come. MRS is grateful to every Member—past, present and future for being the driving force behind the first 50 years of the Society, and we celebrate the possibilities for our community in the next 50 and beyond.

Timeline of MRS History

Beginning with a vision of a "materials-blind" society in the late 1960s, a few forward-looking individuals, with an eye toward advancing the cause of interdisciplinary research, made that vision a reality—the Materials Research Society, officially founded in 1973.
