Linyou CaoLinyou Cao

Linyou Cao is the President of Atomix Inc. (DBA 2D Layer).  Previously, he was an associate professor of materials science and engineering, of physics, and of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University. Prior to joining NC State in 2011, he obtained a PhD degree from Stanford University in 2010, and held a Miller Research Fellowship at UC Berkeley from 2010 to 2011. Cao’s research focuses on atomistic design, discovery, and manufacturing of two-dimensional materials for extreme control of elementary quantum particles and on exploring this control for the development of novel electronic, photonic, and energy harvesting devices. He has published 60+ papers with 9200+ citations, held 7 patents/provisional patents, and founded a start-up company of 2Dlayer. His achievement has been recognized by numerous prestigious awards, including a NSF CAREER Award, Young Investigator Award from the Army Research Office, Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, and Miller Research Fellowship, and by 50+ invited talks at international conferences and academic institutes worldwide.


Seung Min HanSeung Min Han
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology

Seung Min Jane Han is an associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). She obtained her PhD degree in materials science and engineering in 2006 at Stanford University and served as an acting assistant professor at Stanford before joining KAIST in 2010. Her research group focuses on understanding the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of the nanoscale structures at a fundamental level using ex-situ and in-situ scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy nanoindentation methods, and applying the knowledge to evaluate and enhance the mechanical reliability of nanostructures used for different engineering applications. One specific area of her expertise is in the development of high strength, fatigue tolerant, metal-graphene nanolayered composite for stretchable interconnect applications. She has been involved in the organization of several international conferences on mechanical behavior of materials, including the 2017 MRS Spring Meeting symposia on nanostructured composites, and she served as the 2019 MRS Bulletin Organizer.


Lena KourkoutisLena Kourkoutis
Cornell University

Lena F. Kourkoutis is an associate professor of applied and engineering physics at Cornell University. Her research group develops and applies electron microscopy techniques to advance the fundamental understanding of materials and devices with particular emphasis on quantum materials and electrochemical systems. Their current focus is on high-resolution imaging at cryogenic temperature to access emergent electronic phases and to study processes that occur at complex liquid-solid interfaces. Kourkoutis received her undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Rostock in 2003 and a PhD degree from Cornell in 2009. As a Humboldt Research Fellow, she spent 2011-2012 in the Molecular Structural Biology Group at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany, and returned to Cornell to join the Faculty in 2013. Kourkoutis is recipient of a 2014 Packard Fellowship, a 2016 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, a 2017 NSF CAREER award, and the 2018 Burton Metal by the Microscopy Society of America. She is a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.

Andreas Lendlein is Director of the Institute of Biomaterial Science, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and professor for materials in life sciences, University of Potsdam. After receiving his doctoral degree from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), he worked at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed his habilitation at the RWTH Aachen University. His research interests are design and fabrication of multifunctional materials with emphasis given to shape-memory polymers, actuators, biopolymer-based material systems and structured degradable biomaterials, digital design and manufacturing. Biomaterial-based regenerative therapies, controlled drug delivery systems, health technologies and robotics recently are his interests in translational research. Lendlein published more than 550 peer-reviewed papers, is an inventor on about 300 issued patents and published patent applications, and received more than 20 awards for his scientific work and his achievements as an entrepreneur. He is founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Multifunctional Materials and serves on the Executive Advisory Board of VCH-Wiley´s Macromolecular Journals.


Xiaolin Li PhotoXiaolin Li
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Xiaolin Li is a senior scientist and team lead of battery development and reliability group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He received his PhD degree in 2005 from Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University and conducted his postdoctoral research in Professor Hongjie Dai’s group at Stanford University. He has extensive experience with carbon nanotubes, graphene, and is an expert in designing nanostructured functional materials for various applications. His current research interest is on battery materials and renewable energy. Li has published many papers in top research journals and his work has resulted in more than 27,000 citations over the years. In 2018, Li was selected as “the top 1% highly cited researchers.”

Message from the Meeting Chairs

The 2021 MRS Spring Meeting will be held virtually April 17 - 23, 2021. There will be 55 symposia grouped into seven topical clusters, as follows:

Broader Impact – This cluster features one symposium dedicated to sustainability and its incorporation into materials science education, training and public Outreach. This complex topic will be addressed in a broad overview, taking into account its high relevance for various aspects of material research, processes and applications.

Characterization and Modeling – This cluster features eight symposia dedicated to methods and tool development for characterization and modeling of a broad range of materials and applications. Special focus will be on materials design and characterization with data-driven approaches, functional and operando imaging, understanding mechano-chemical coupling and techniques for ground state and excited state calculations, as well as their applications for materials prediction. 

Electronics and Optics – This cluster features nine symposia covering a variety of topical areas in electronics and optics. These include symposia focusing on electronic and optical materials, such as organic semiconductors, halide semiconductors, ionic semiconductors and ultrawide bandgap materials.  Also included are symposia on electronic and optical functionalities and devices ranging from metamaterials and plasmonics to bioelectronics, next-generation interconnects and negative capacitance in ferroelectronics.

Energy and Sustainability – This cluster features 10 symposia covering energy and environmental research subtopics including energy harvest, storage and conversion. The focus is on catalysis with sustainable approaches, fundamental science and material development of solid state and next-generation batteries, interface characterization of electrochemical devices and environment systems. Also included are frontier of perovskite materials, thin film semiconductor photovoltaics and concentrated solar energy technologies.

Nanomaterials and Quantum Materials This cluster features nine symposia dedicated to nanoscale and quantum materials in a broad range of chemistries, exhibiting simple and complex electronic, atomic and mesoscopic structures. The symposia cover topics ranging from their synthesis and properties to device applications and performance, including structure-property relationships formulated through integrated and iterative experimentation, advanced characterization, and materials theory and simulation. Special focus is on superconductivity, low-dimensional materials and heterostructures, in- and out-of-equilibrium responses, heat transport, spin textures, topological effects and other quantum phenomena.

Soft Materials and Biomaterials – This cluster features 13 symposia which comprises three subtopics on polymer and composite research taking in view biomaterials, multifunctional materials and sustainable systems/processes. Materials for regenerative therapies, medical devices, controlled drug delivery systems and healthcare technologies are considered with their complex interactions in physiological environments. Strategies to integrate multiple functions in one material system, which often seem to exclude each other, will be addressed from different perspectives: self-organizing systems (e.g. by non-classical crystallization), multimaterial approaches and fabrication schemes with an emphasis on 3D printing. Robotics will be highlighted as an emerging field for multifunctional materials. Finally, special emphasis is given to sustainable systems/processes including green chemistry approaches and environmental technologies.

Structural Materials This cluster features five symposia that cover topics including structural material design and fabrication, characterization and modeling, microstructure to property analysis and application of structural materials for a variety of engineering applications. Specific focus will be on mechanical properties of small scale structural materials, probing the deformation mechanisms using in-situ nanomechanical testing methods and modelling, architectured materials for structural applications, design, fabrication and analysis of high entropy alloys and mechanics of energy storage materials.

Symposium X – Frontiers of Materials Research will feature presentations aimed at a broad audience and on topics at the forefront of research on materials science and engineering.

To complement the symposia, tutorials will provide detailed information on particularly exciting areas of research and the Exhibit will showcase products and services of interest to the scientific community.
