2022 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit

Symposium EN01-Redox Flow Batteries—Materials, Methods and Devices

Recent progress in the development of materials and characterization methods have resulted in more flexibility and diversity in the design of redox flow batteries and related devices for energy conversion and storage applications. A variety of new flow cell chemistries are under consideration, which encompass a range of inorganic and organic active materials, including oligomeric and polymeric materials. Meanwhile, flowable redox active materials are also being explored for hydrogen production, biomass conversion, supercapacitors, and photocatalytic fuel cells, among others. Such systems present unique challenges in materials development ranging from redox active molecule synthesis and electrolyte solvation chemistry to electrode, catalyst, and membrane materials. Advances toward next generation flow-based energy systems are critically dependent on improving flow cell function with scalable, economically viable materials.

This symposium will include fundamental studies of redox active materials relevant to flow battery applications. It is intended to cover a wide range of topics related to materials, characterization, and development of flow-based energy technologies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: soluble transition metal complexes, organic small molecules, and polyatomic species; redox-active oligomers and polymers; flowable semi-solid energy storage materials; and flow-battery membrane and electrode design. Contributions incorporating experimental, theoretical, computational, and/or technoeconomic studies are equally encouraged.

Topics will include:

  • Electro-active compounds for redox flow batteries
  • Ion-exchange membrane/separator preparation and analysis
  • Electrolyte solvation chemistry
  • Advances in flow cell electrode design
  • Advanced characterization techniques
  • Advances in electrolyte stability
  • Materials for flow field and stack design
  • Flow cell transport phenomena
  • Computational modeling
  • Prototypes, scale-up, and technoeconomics
