Symposium ES17-Perovskite-Based Light-Emission and Frontier Phenomena—Single Crystals, Thin Films and Nanocrystals

The introduction of halide perovskites has catalyzed an unprecedented revolution in the field of (opto)electronics. Halide perovskites are a very large family of materials that exhibit wide tunability in the chemical composition from organic-inorganic hybrid to all-inorganic, as well as the crystal-structure dimensionality from 3D to 0D. This has endowed halide perovskites with a substantial variety of materials properties (luminescent, dielectric/ferroelectric, thermoelectric, electrochemical, thermochromic, etc.) in addition to the widely-studied photovoltaic property. These perovskite materials can be also easily processed into single-crystals, thin-films and nanocrystals using low-cost solution/vapor methods. Therefore, a lot of promise is being seen for applying halide perovskites to a board range of device applications that are beyond solar cells. These applications include, but are not limited to, light-emitting devices, lasers, photo/X-ray/radiation detectors, memristors, amplifiers, or field-effect transistors. Especially, light-emitting devices based on halide perovskite thin-films/nanocrystals exhibit impressive brightness with continuous tunability in vivid colors and very narrow emission bandwidth, thereby emerging as a “game-changer” display technology. Other exceptional phenomena that have also been discovered in halide perovskites are ultra-long carrier diffusion lengths, fast ion migration, ultra-low thermal conductivities, extremely sensitive interaction with light/atmosphere, and so on. And a surge of research efforts are undergoing towards in-depth understanding of these phenomena, based on which many innovations of novel devices are being developed. This symposium will focus on the rising research interests in halide perovskites involving the exploration of light-emission and various frontier phenomena, and stimulate the development of high-performance perovskite-based light-emitting devices and other emerging applications.
