Career Planning in a Crisis:  How to Move Your Career Forward

Thursday, September 3, 2020 – 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Crises can happen at any time to anyone, and can affect many aspects of your career advancement plans. Crises can also derail our goals and projects, cost us precious resources to do our jobs, and can even lead to job loss. To help mitigate how a crisis affects your professional goals, it’s a good idea to build and execute a strong, customized crisis management plan for your career. This plan can help you identify and potentially mitigate points of risk that could negatively impact your career in a crisis. It will create a cushion, so that when there is a crisis, you have a logical strategy already in place that will help you get back to where you need to be. In this webinar, we will address how to develop this “insurance” plan, using fundamentals from the field of crisis management itself. You will emerge with tools, tactics, and the ability to construct, test, fine tune, and implement your own career crisis management plan.

Writing Concrete Abstracts and Titles: A Webinar and Workshop Series

Wednesday, September 9, 2020 - 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Anyone writing or editing abstracts knows that there is an art to conveying complex ideas and data in an approachable way. Whether it's for a scientific paper, an oral presentation, or the front page of your lab's website, the process of writing and rewriting an abstract and developing concise title takes experience and practice. Join MRS and a panel of editors from symposium organizers and scientific journals for a webinar on the abstract writing process.   After the webinar, you are encouraged to sign up for a one-on-one session with editors and authors to receive specific feedback on your abstract and title. Here you will learn more ways to make your work approachable to broad audiences and methods for making your research stand out.  Whether you're new to abstract writing, or already mentoring students on their own, this webinar and workshop series will provide examples and tips you can use in your own writing or editing responsibilities.

Banish Impostor Syndrome for Good!

Tuesday, October 13, 2020 - 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Let’s face it- impostor syndrome sucks. It makes us believe that we unworthy and frauds. It tricks us into minimizing our contributions and value. More critically, impostor syndrome insidiously robs us of future prosperity as it convinces us we do not belong and should not pursue opportunities to advance our career, launch and facilitate exciting new collaborations, and be more innovative, inventive, agile, and novel in our problem-solving. Consequently, impostor syndrome negatively impacts not only our own potential, but that of the greater STEM community. Let’s knock this out of our brains for good! In this webinar, you will learn strategies and tactics to rid this from your brilliant mind and how to navigate it and stamp it out if it creeps into every day scenarios. Banish Impostor Syndrome for good!

In this webinar, we will discuss strategies and tactics for finding new collaborators and building mutually-beneficial partnerships with professionals across the globe (and perhaps on some exoplanets too!). We will utilize various methods to find and reach out to people, and start and nurture those critical conversations which can birth amazing collabs! Let’s network!
