Tutorial EL01: Introduction to Phase-Change Materials and Their Applications

This Tutorial will cover a broad spectrum of topics in the field of phase-change materials, including: fundamental bonding phenomena, novel alloys with tailored properties, deposition/growing techniques, failure mechanisms, device fabrication and packaging challenges, and emerging applications in nanoscale electronics and photonics. The intended learning objectives are:

1) understand the unique chemical bonding mechanisms and resulting physical properties of chalcogenide phase change materials

2) describe the origin of the electronic and optical properties contrast 

3) recognize the materials and devices mechanisms to overcome the resistance drift in electronic phase-change memories

4) understand the fabrication, performance, and challenges of electronic phase change embedded memories

5) demonstrate the potential of computational phase change memories in low-power parallel computing systems

6) distinguish the properties of phase-change materials of interest for photonic applications

7) identify the emerging photonic applications of phase change materials in optoelectronic devices to neuromorphic computing

8) recognize the failure mechanisms of phase-change materials in electronic, and photonic devices

9) learn to choose a phase-change material depending on the target application
