Monday, April 22
1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Summit - Seattle Convention Center, Level 3, Room 330

The MRS Communications Lecture recognizes excellence in the field of materials research through work published in MRS Communications during the previous year. Yury Gogotsi of Drexel University will speak on MXenes and the environment, one aspect of which he published in "Improving environmental stability of MXene films by intercalation of N-methylformamide" in MRS Communications,  Volume 13, Issue 5 (2023).

MXene in the Environment and for the Environment

Yury Gogotsi is a Distinguished University Professor and Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Endowed Chair in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University. He is the founding Director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute. Gogotsi received his BS/MS degrees in metallurgy in 1984 and PhD degree in physical chemistry in 1986 from Kyiv Polytechnic, and a DSc degree in materials engineering from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1995. Together with his students and colleagues, he made principal contributions to the development of materials for electrochemical capacitors and other energy-storage devices, discovered a large family of 2D carbides and nitrides (MXene)s and developed carbide-derived carbons with tunable micropores. Gogotsi has received numerous awards for his research, including the Materials Research Society (MRS) Medal, the International Ceramics Prize from the World Academy of Ceramics, the American Chemical Society Award in the Chemistry of Materials, and the Jan Czochralski Award from the European Materials Research Society. He has also been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the World Academy of Ceramics, the European Academy of Sciences, and many other professional societies. He holds honorary doctorates from several European universities. He was elected a Fellow of MRS in 2011, he chaired the MRS Student Chapter Committee and served on the MRS Board of Directors.
